Who is Dhanteras?

Dhanteras is a God of Ayurveda who imparted the wisdom of Ayurveda for the betterment of mankind, and to help rid it of the suffering of disease.

In 28 October 2016, the Indian Ministry of Ayurveda , Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy announced that the Dhanteras day will be celebrated as the National Ayurveda Day.

On this day, Mainly Gujarati families will have a meal of Daal Baath and Malpura.

On this day, we worship the Lord Dhanvantari. According to the Hindu Mythology, Lord Dhanvantari emerged during Samudra Manthan while holding a Kalasha full of Amrit in one hand and the sacred text about Ayurveda in the other hand. He is also considered to be the God of Vadiya of Gods which means Physicians of Gods.

On this day, the houses which are dirty or not been cleaned and even cleaned houses where cleaned in the preparation for Diwali. Houses were also whitewashed and decorated with different kind or flowers, and decorative things. The Lord Dhanvantari, the God of health and Ayurveda is also worshipped in the evening.

The main entrance are mainly decorated with holiday lights, colourful lanterns, and Rangoli designs. These all preparations are done for welcoming the Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity.

Small footprints are also drawn with rice flour and vermilion powder all over the houses to indicate her long awaited arrival. In honour of Lakshmi and Dhanvantari, the diyas ( lamps ) are kept burning all through the nights.
