Andy Dufresne is convicted of murdering his wife and her lover in 1947. He is sentenced to life sentence at the Shashank State Prison. In the starting he was assigned in prison laundry where he sexually assaulted by the sisters and their leader, bogs in the prison everyday. Andy asked for a rock hammer from Ellis who is an inmate ans prison contraband, so that he can make a chess pieces from stone.
