Banksy’s arteries were $1.87 million in the last auction in, and developed UK Parliament Painting was expected to 1.5 million pounds to 2 million pounds in Thursday’s sale.
The oil painting measured 4.2 metres by 2.5 metres. This is Largest Canvas by an unknown artist ever.
“Record price for a Banksy painting set at auction tonight. Shame I didn’t still own it,” the artist said on his Instagram account.
“Inevitably what we have been seeing in the Houses of Parliament over the last few months and weeks has become a daily soap opera, not just in the UK… but also across the rest of Europe and indeed the world,” Alex Branczik, Sotheby’s European head of contemporary art, told AFP ahead of the sale.
About Parliamentary Art Collection
The United Kingdom Parliament held 8,500 artworks as a collection known as The Parliamentary Art Collection. The house of Commons and the house of lords owned the works. In the Palace of Westminster, approximately 80% of the collection is displayed.
The collection includes around 7,000 paintings, drawings and other images, 700 sculptures, 600 coins and medals, and around 100 pieces in other media, such as textiles or wallpaper.
