As they head to St. Mary’s to play Southampton in the Premier League, Chelsea looks to build on their second victory of the campaign.
Prior to defeating Leicester City 2-1 in a spirited victory while down a man, the Blues had only earned one point from their previous two games. Raheem Sterling scored twice in his first game for his new team, giving the Blues three points. Chelsea managed to survive Leicester City’s barrage of shots while only giving up one goal.
Thomas Tuchel’s group has had a difficult start to the Premier League season, but they are still making progress. They are still looking for reinforcements in the final stages of the transfer market.
Meanwhile, Southampton was defeated by Manchester United 1-0 over the weekend thanks to a Bruno Fernandes goal. The Saints’ theme in the game was squandered opportunities, as they failed to score despite outshooting the Red Devils by 17 shots and scoring 1.45 anticipated goals. Che Adams squandered a few good opportunities during the whole 90 minutes, failing to add to their four points earned over the first four games of the season.
In their previous 15 matches, Southampton has only defeated Chelsea once in all competitions, a 2-0 triumph at St. Mary’s on Boxing Day of 2019. Timo Werner and Mason Mount each scored two goals in their last encounter, which resulted in a humiliating 6-0 loss.

Lineup predictions and squad news for Southampton vs. Chelsea
Even though Southampton lost to Manchester United, they performed well overall, and Ralph Hasenhuttl could be inclined to stick with the same starting eleven as a consequence.
This season, Che Adams has been a standout up front, first off the bench and subsequently gaining a spot in the starting lineup, but his errors against Manchester United were expensive. If Hasenhuttl thinks a move will keep things interesting during a rapid turnaround, he always has the option of returning to Stuart Armstrong up front.
Oriol Romeu might be used in midfield to keep the players fresh given the short break. Romeu, a longtime mainstay in the Saints’ midfield, has only made one appearance thus far in this young season, in the season opener.
Predicted starting lineup for Southampton (4-2-2-3):
Armstrong, Aribo, Elyounoussi, Walker-Peters, Djenepo, Salisu, Bella-Kotchap, and Bazunu (GK) are the players in the starting lineup.
Defender Kalidou Koulibaly returns to action for Chelsea after serving a one-match suspension for his red card against Leeds United. Although Thiago Silva and Trevoh Chalobah had a strong game against Leicester City down a man, he might not secure a spot in the starting lineup.
After receiving two cautions in the space of six minutes against the Foxes, Conor Gallagher was dismissed and will now miss the match. The Chelsea midfield is once more in upheaval as Thomas Tuchel searches for a partner for Jorginho there. Mateo Kovacic may be a choice, however it might not be worth the risk right now since he is recovering from a knee injury. Due to the muscle injury he sustained against Tottenham, N’Golo Kante is still sidelined. Ruben Loftus-Cheek is now the only probable starter left.
Mason Mount has had a difficult start to the Premier League campaign for Chelsea’s attack; he was substituted against Leicester City before halftime. That would open up a spot for Christian Pulisic, who might get his season’s first league start after a rapid turnaround.
Reece James is apparently going to miss the game, necessitating a change in formation as Cesar Azpilicueta is a potential replacement. Tuchel would then switch from a back-three to a classic back-four, bringing Billy Gilmour into the middle of the field.
Predicted starting lineup for Chelsea (4-3-3):
Azpilicueta, Koulibaly, Silva, Cucurella, Mendy (GK), Gilmour, Jorginho, and Loftus-Cheek — Havertz, Pulisic, and Sterling.
Chelsea vs. Southampton choice for the matchup
odds provided by Sports Interaction (Canada), DraftKings (USA), and SkyBet (UK).
Under Ralph Hassenhuttl, who doesn’t back down from top-tier opponents, Southampton has a history of producing some unpleasant outcomes. However, Saints have flashes of talent throughout the season and, but for some shoddy finishing, would have won the game against Man United.
Both of these teams have a similar profile in that they both struggle through the first 45 minutes before launching an onslaught after the interval. While expecting Southampton to defeat a Chelsea team that is flawed but developing is a tall order, the second half should be exciting.
