As of November 8, 2024, international students in Canada with valid study permits can work off-campus for up to 24 hours per week during regular school terms. This change provides greater flexibility for students to support themselves financially while pursuing their education.
Eligibility Requirements
To work up to 24 hours per week off-campus, students must:
- Be enrolled full-time at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in a program lasting at least 6 months that leads to a degree, diploma, or certificate.
- Have started their studies.
- Hold a Social Insurance Number (SIN) and have their study permit include authorization to work off-campus.
Additional Work Rules
- During Scheduled Breaks: Students can work unlimited hours during school breaks, such as summer or winter holidays, provided they remain full-time students before and after the break.
- Compliance: Students must adhere to the 24-hour limit during regular terms to maintain their study permit status. Violating this condition may result in losing their student status and future work permit eligibility.
Important Note
Work performed remotely for employers outside Canada does not count toward the 24-hour limit. Students should always ensure they meet the requirements outlined on their study permits.
