Because of a unique weapon employed in the Last War, people now spontaneously catch fire even when they are only a few feet away from a small source of fire. The only reliable source of energy for mankind is contained within the corpses of flamelings, and it is the task of the sickle-wielding firecatchers who enter the depths of the great forest to hunt them. The “Firecatcher Lord” is rumored to be among the firecatchers; he will be able to gather the fire of the thousand-year comet, the “Wandering Spark,” which has been in the sky since it was launched up during the Last War but is now coming back to earth.

Tko, a little girl from a village that makes paper, finds herself in the forbidden forest and under attack from flamelings until a flamecatcher races to save her. In another location, a little kid named Kshi who was born in the capital city takes care of his younger sister after losing his mother to industrial toxins.
