The plot of the game is as follows, according to Square Enix:
In NieR:Automata, the androids 2B, 9S, and A2 fight to retake the machine-driven dystopia that has been taken over by strong machines.
Mechanical creatures from another planet have forced humanity out of Earth. A group of android warriors are sent by the human resistance in a last-ditch attempt to retake the planet and annihilate the invaders. Now, a conflict between androids and robots is raging… An impending conflict that could reveal a long-forgotten truth about the Earth.
The initial NieR game, a spinoff of the Drakengard series, was created in 2010 by the now-defunct Japanese game company Cavia (Drakengard, Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles). NieR Gestalt for the Xbox 360 and NieR Replicant for the PlayStation 3 are the two systems for which Square Enix made the game available. The protagonist’s character design in NieR Replicant was altered, and the narrative had a few other small changes. The final game Cavia created before dissolving and being absorbed into AQ Interactive Inc. in July 2010 was NieR.
In April 2021, a remastered version of NieR Replicant called NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… was released globally for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC through Steam.
In Japan in February 2017, then in North America and Europe in March 2017, the NieR:Automata 2 PS4 release was made available.
Additionally, the game was released by Square Enix in June 2018 on the Xbox One and on the PC via Steam in March 2017. The game will debut on the Nintendo Switch on October 6. More than 6 million copies of the game have been distributed physically and digitally..
The first mobile game in the NieR video game series, NieR Re[in]carnation, was released in Japan in February 2021 for iOS and Android devices, and in the West in July 2021.
Update: NieR:Automata Ver1.1a is the title of the anime.
