Brain implant restoring the man’s hand (PARALYSED) movement and sense of touch.
Scientists found a new way to reverse paralysis which is a brain implant. By this process, a paralysed person can move their hand and even restore sense of touch.
The first on which this test was a success is Ian Burkhart. He is having a severed in his spinal cord in a driving accident occurred in 2010. He was paralysed in his hands and legs.
Researchers of Battelle ( a non profit research organisation in Ohio) tried to reverse paralyse of him by implanting a brain – computer interface (BCI) inside this skull in 2014.
How Brain Computer Interface works to reverse the paralyse?
Brain computer interface collects electrical signals used to move body and sends them down through a cable from his head to a computer.The signals will be decoded by a program and then the data willbe transmitted to electrodes wrapped around his forearm.
By Brain implant Burkhart was able to play a modified version of Guitar Hero. He was able to move his hand and push buttons on the neck of the guitar.
But there is a issue that he was able to tell that he is holding a object without actually seeing the object. He also can’t able to control the firmness of his grip.
Scientists will try to restore the sensation of feeling the touch soon.
Touch From Motion Got Separated by Brain Implant
To feel the touch, researchers will split the signals coming from BCI. One signal will be sent to his forearm and another will be used to touch which will be on his armband on his bicep.
Signals will be converted into the vibration which will make Burkhart feel the touch of a Object. He will also know the gripping of an object.
Due to this technology, Burkhart will be able to touch and control his hand.
“It has been amazing to see the possibilities of sensory information coming from a device that was originally created to only allow me to control my hand in a one-way direction,” said Burkhart.
The technology is really awesome. It will change the life of many people. But right now, the system is large. It will need more word on its size and more. But surely, it will give life to many peoples who forgot to live due to Paralyse.
